Dieter Kaudel ( git.) Fred Lamberson (sax ) Thomas Römer ( drums ) Wolfgang Salomon ( bass )

Juni 1982, Open- Air- Festivals in Trio-Besetzung: Dieter, Thomas und Wolfgang in Salo am Lago di Garda, und Castello di Galliate / Novara.

Soundcheck : Salo/ Lago di Garda v.l. Gunni, Thomas, Luciano Trevisan, Wolfgang, Dieter,

Interview Antonello Cresti und Wolfgang Salomon excerpt from “Solchi Sperimentali Kraut”

A.C. –Would you like to tell us about your musical/cultural training at the beginning of your career?

W.S. – I visited “Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium” music-school. Piano or violin were the only instruments, which were allowed at school in the early 60ties! Guitar, or even drums were considered as “devil-instruments”. In fact, there were only few teachers who really influenced my musical career.- We picked up the blues-licks of the live-bands from England or U.S.A. They were performing at local “army-clubs” in our region. These ”lessons” we learned on the street or during jam-sessions with on-the-road-musicians…

A.C. – One main ingredient of your music is the „ethnic“ influence. Is this fascination coming just from a musical approach or is it a way to express your love for other cultures/ways of life?

W.S. –The fascination for “ethnic -music” was more than just a fashion or a nice color in a composition. I shared the love for other cultures/ways of life together with Lars Hollmer from Sweden, Michel Berckmans from Belgium, Santiago Jimenez from Cuba and many fantastic outstanding musicians I had the honour and the pleasure to play with. You can find examples, if you click “TheSalomonMusic” on youtube “Von Zamla –Akarondo”…

A.C.– Which is in your opinion the best album of Munju, would you explain your choice to our readers?

W.S. My favorite L.P. from Munju-times is still the 4th album  „Le perfectionniste“. Everybody of us learned a new instrument. As special guest we had a friend von Zamla , Michel Berckmans on the bassoon. It was a very good period for Munju back there in the 80ties. New doors were opening up for all members of the band…

A.C.-The expression “krautrock”, a misleading and ridiculous one, has been created to describe the incredibile musical scene of Germany in the seventies. I could imagine better ways to describe that flux of creativity, but at least it gives the evidence of something born to be in a space and in a time. Why german music has been so influential over the years?

W.S. –   Probably the expression “Krautrock” was invented by the anglo-american music industry. For Munju I can say, that we never took care about these strange labels. We were belonging to the post Can- Kraftwerk-generation and to the independent music-movement, anticipating the ideas of cultural exchange. Yes some structures of the movement were adapted by a new generation of musicians and bands, not only in Germany…
